Stomping Bigfoot
Midlakes United 6, Bigfoot FC 1
Midlakes turned Tuesday night’s home match into the highest-scoring regular-season performance in club history, dismantling Bigfoot FC 6-1 in front of the Bellevue College crowd.
The visitors held their own for the opening minutes, but they had no answer once Trey Mitchell, in his first Midlakes start, got going. Drawing a foul as he shielded the ball along the goal line, the forward stepped up to the penalty kick in the 23rd minute and beat goalkeeper Parker Norris with a low, hard strike to the right. Five minutes later he doubled the lead, racing onto a Reise Corpuz cross after Corpuz pounced on a Bigfoot giveaway at midfield. Four minutes after that, a frantic Norris clearance under pressure from Corpuz fell to Mitchell 20 yards out, and he instantly fired back with his left foot straight into the top corner. The hat trick took Mitchell just nine minutes to complete, and it was Midlakes’ first in a league match.
The goals kept coming before halftime. In the 45th minute, a slick, systematic passing sequence culminated in midfielder Dan McKay connecting with a surging Kavi Badh, who took one touch to control and then sent a thunderous finish into the upper corner. Deep into first-half stoppage time, Sebastian Rangel curled a free kick around the wall for the fifth goal. The ref awarded the set piece after a collision left Victor Akoum unable to continue play. Fortunately, the recommendation after exams was only that Akoum spend a week recovering before resuming play.
The second half settled into a more even rhythm. Bigfoot clawed one back in the 69th minute. Arjun Venkat, on for Akoum, unintentionally shouldered Chase Potter in the area. The ref didn’t flash a card, but he did award the penalty. Keeper Will Ficek couldn’t get a hand on it despite guessing the right direction. Midlakes had the final say, though. Michael Luande added a sixth goal in stoppage time. Idin Fakhri, in his first league appearance for the squad, got on a breakaway alongside Luande and unselfishly elected to set up his teammate, who had the better angle.
Ficek made seven saves from eight shots on target, the lone blemish coming from the penalty. Harrison Shaw and Rangel both went the full 90, respectively anchoring the back line and midfield, which controlled the contest from start to finish. Mitchell, though, was the clear choice for Player of the Match.
When the final whistle sounded, Midlakes had secured its second win in three league contests. With the record standing at 2-0-1, it’s the best start in the team’s three-season history.
